Tony Allen
In 2002, Tony helped found Cause for Hope to assist the poor in Central America. Cause for Hope creates jobs, micro credit loans and vocational training for thousands of people. Tony helped a small-business man become the largest candy distributor in Choluteca, Honduras. He also helped create a Honduras company, which employs 250 people in a clean and safe workplace.

Rita Bowers
After learning that her 6-year-old daughter had a friend in need of a kidney transplant, Rita volunteered to give up her own kidney. Rita had returned to work to help her own family pay off several medical bills, but she took unpaid days off of work to attend doctors’ appointments, undergo blood tests and fill out paperwork. The operation was successful and Rita’s recovery lasted about six weeks.

Nancy Hale
An elementary school teacher by profession, Nancy has volunteered several hours each afternoon to tutor students struggling with math. Her dedication to teaching became apparent when, 12 years before receiving the XO Award, Nancy was diagnosed with cancer and underwent chemotherapy for a year. Except for surgery, Nancy did not miss a day of school.

Norma Juardo
Norma is the Community Services Coordinator for the Uintah Basin Food Bank. In 2005, she helped more than 4,000 indigent people with emergency shelter and food. Her workload requires two people, yet there is only enough funding for one. Norma must monitor existing funding sources as well as seeking new funding options.

Dennis Lloyd
As general counsel for Workers Compensation Fund, Dennis created the Legacy of Learning in 1990—the first of its kind in the country. The program awards scholarships to spouses and children who have lost loved ones in work-related fatalities. Since its inception, WCF has granted more than $1 million in scholarships.

Kelly Sheppard
Kelly founded the Eagle-Condor Humanitarian group to construct greenhouses, public restrooms, libraries and community centers in the poorest areas of Peru. Eagle-Condor sponsors literacy initiatives, health and hygiene groups, business training, and micro loans.

Kayleen Simmons
In 1993, Kayleen Simmons formed People Helping People to support low-income single mothers in the Salt Lake metropolitan area. The program provides educational assistance to single moms wanting to developing job skills, personal responsibility, resumes, interviewing techniques and career planning.

Vance Smith
In Vietnam, Vance was the sole survivor in a tank hit by a shell. When he returned home, he felt the nation’s veterans were being forgotten. For more than 20 years, Vance has placed 3,000 flags on the graves of veterans in the Valley View Cemetery in West Valley.
